PostgreSQL VS-Code Extension: Practical Workflows for Open Source Developers and DBAs

This talk shows how the PostgreSQL extension for Visual Studio Code can be used to work with PostgreSQL more efficiently—from development to basic operations—using a single, familiar tool.

I’ll demonstrate how the extension connects to any PostgreSQL database and supports everyday tasks such as schema browsing, query execution, plan inspection, result export, and launching psql, all directly from VS Code.

The session also covers AI-assisted features, including natural-language interaction and agent-style workflows that help generate SQL, explain schemas, and automate routine database tasks. The focus is practical: where these features save time, and where PostgreSQL fundamentals still matter.

This talk is for PostgreSQL developers and DBAs who want simpler workflows, fewer tools, and faster feedback when working with PostgreSQL.

Takeaways

• Use VS Code as a single workspace for PostgreSQL work

• Apply AI assistance for SQL writing and query understanding

• Know when AI helps—and when SQL is the better choice
